The principle of a float level sensor is relatively simple: a float slides on a vertical axis as the level of a liquid changes. To measure the liquid level, simply measure the position of the float on the vertical axis. It is a precise type of sensor, using a simple and proven process, and the measurement is unaffected by the viscosity of the liquid or the presence of foam on its surface. A float level sensor uses an electromechanical process to measure the level of a fluid or of loose material in a container.

Applications

These devices are employed primarily to measure the level of clean fluids and materials.

Technologies

Such sensors consist of a low-density float which rests at the surface of the liquid. The float rises and falls along a vertical tube as the level of the liquid changes. A magnet within the float generates an electrical signal in the tube which is converted into a level measurement.

How to choose

Since these instruments are employed for a wide variety of industrial purposes, choice will depend on the physical characteristics of the fluid or loose material in question, the type of container and the temperature, pressure, explosive risks and other aspects of the operating environment.
