A function generator is commonly found in electronic testing and measurement. Its interface enables the user to define the parameters of the desired output signal. It can have several outputs or channels and can be synchronized with other devices.
ApplicationsThese generators synthesize various signals (sinusoidal, triangular or square wave) for testing electronic components or subcomponents. They have frequency, amplitude, average value (offset) and duty factor controls. Wobble modulation control enables them to provide a circuit frequency reading. Models used for radio equipment testing have AM and FM modulation.
TechnologiesFunction generators use a voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) to generate a triangular wave form of defined frequency, from which other signals are derived. Digital models use digital direct synthesis (DDS) to produce a variety of user-defined waveforms. Signal parameters are entered into the memory, converted to analog form and transposed in frequency by a VCO multiplier circuit. These are known as arbitrary waveform generators (AWG).
How to chooseChoice will depend on spectrum range and precision. Digital models offer more possibilities than analog versions.
