A chromatograph decomposes a mixture in order to perform quantitative and qualitative analyses. A gas chromatograph employs a gas as its mobile phase. The stationary phase is usually a column holding a thin liquid film.
ApplicationsThese laboratory instruments are mostly used to detect small quantities of a substance because of their significant ability to decompose mixtures. They can carry out rapid, precise analyses.
TechnologiesThere are two methods of performing gas chromatography. The partition chromatograph separates the components of a mixture according to their differing boiling points. In this procedure, the components do not interact with the stationary phase. An adsorption chromatograph has columns filled with polarized stationary phase material. Analyte characteristics are indicated by the length of time it adheres to this material while passing through the column.
How to chooseChoice will depend on the specifics of the gas detector. The great variety of detectors includes those for qualitative analysis, as well as those capable of identifying specific components. Several different types can be used so long as the upstream detection process is non-destructive.
The nature of the columns, including length and diameter, also affects analytic capabilities. However, they can be changed if necessary. The nature of the mobile phase gas is another important factor.
