Secondary switchgear or secondary distribution switchgear is used to control, protect and isolate electrical equipment in distribution substations. It is mostly used to de-energize medium-voltage equipment for proper network function or for safety reasons.
ApplicationsSecondary switchgear is found in:
- compact substations
- compact transformer substations such as on a wind farm
- underground substations
- commercial buildings
It can be installed in both indoor and outdoor environments and can be protected from wet or dusty conditions.
Secondary switchgear comprises an electrical disconnect switch, a series of fuses or circuit breakers and an enclosure. In order to isolate the conductors, the switchgear can be insulated by oil, gas or air.
How to chooseWhen selecting secondary switchgear, be sure to include information such as:
- current rating
- voltage class (low, medium or high voltage)
- the type of isolating medium (gas, oil, air)
