TechnologiesOptical detectors consist of an LED and a photoelectric sensor in a sensing chamber. The photocell detects the presence of smoke by reflection. Some linear detectors use an external reflector for the surveillance of large areas. Stand-alone smoke detector alarms are battery-operated optical devices used in offices and buildings.
Ionization detectors sound if the conductivity of the ionized air changes. They have been in use for several dozen years and are the most effective models for detecting open flames, but the small amount of radioactive material they contain limits their use to specific settings.
Industrial models may be connected to a fire alarm panel for centralized control.
Choice will focus on selection of a stand-alone detector or of a specialized model designed for dangers due to the presence of flammable materials. This latter type often is connected to a centralized surveillance system. Local regulations should be consulted to ensure compliance.
