A switch-mode power supply, also known as a switching power supply or SMPS, is a non-linear type of electrical supply. It is much smaller and more compact than linear power supplies for a given output.
ApplicationsSwitch-mode power supplies are used in device and machinery power-supply subsystems. Their compactness has led to decreased device size. However, they generate unwanted electrical noise, making them unsuitable for certain applications. They can be found in most electronic equipment (computers, monitors, measuring devices, etc.).
TechnologiesTwo main types of switch-mode power supplies exist. A direct conduction supply (forward) instantaneously transmits power; an inductive storage supply (flyback) stocks electrical energy in an energy storage inductance for later use. Electrical efficiency of 78% is quite common. A high-frequency switching unit allows the use of transformers in an energy-efficient mode. This increases conversion efficiency and thermal dissipation.
How to chooseChoosing a switch-mode power supply's technology involves determining desired power. Applications requiring little power usually utilize flyback-type supplies (LCD monitors, television, DVD player, etc.).
