A thyristor is a three-pin semiconductor that serves as a slave power diode. It conducts once a trigger voltage is applied.
ApplicationsThese devices control circuits in static energy converters and inverters. They are common in power applications in the automobile and railroad industries, avionics, for motor speed control and battery recharging.
TechnologiesAn untriggered thyristor is an open circuit. Triggering requires that three conditions be met: the trigger current must exceed the maximum gate current, it must be applied for a sufficient period and it must allow the establishment of anode-cathode flow above the specified latching current. Once triggered, flow continues so long as the holding current is exceeded.
Power thyristors up to 2kA are used for AC-DC rectification. Changing the trigger delay, or flow angle adjusts delivered power. Different housings are available, including TO220, DPACK, TO48 and modular. The GTO thyristor is a special gate turn-off model. It has limited commutation frequency and has generally been replaced by MOSFET devices.
Static parameters are acceptable voltage and current levels. Dynamic characteristics include trigger and latching current, voltage and current variation limitations, holding current and opening time.
