Aavid Thermalloy has developed a new series of extrusions to satisfy the requirements of our customers with a view to boosting the performance of their applications.
The improved extrusion process, which has been studied in cooperation with our production sites in Asia, means we have managed to arrive at extremely important extrusion ratios (ratio between the height and the distance between the fins), up to 20:1 versus the traditional 8:1.
Aavid is now able to substitute many products offered by the competition that are manufactured using technologies that are more expensive, such as products assembled using brazing or bonding or with folded fins. This results in a product that is up to 50% cheaper and lighter in weight (as in the case of products that are bonded or assembled by interference fit) but maintaining the same performance.
Aavid can supply standard solutions off our production lines in as little as 48 hours as well as develop a personalized product according to the customer’s specifications. Here are examples of the thermal characteristics of some of the profiles currently available:
HFR170
Width: 189.4 mm
Height: 74.0 mm
Fin pitch: 4.3 mm
Rth: 0.084 °C/W
Weight: 16.4kg/m
HFR380
Width: 393.6 mm
Height: 80.7 mm
Fin pitch: 5.8 mm
Rth: 0.050 °C/W
Weight: 34.1 kg/m
Given the fin pitch, these are profiles optimized for work in forced convection and therefore it is necessary to identify the most suitable fan to reach the required performance.
