Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) gets in the air primarily through emissions from cars, trucks, buses, power plants and factories as a by-product of the combustion process. Its presence in air contributes to the formation and modification of other air pollutants such as ozone, particulate matter and acid rain. Exposure irritates airways and can aggravate respiratory diseases, particularly asthma, leading to symptoms such as coughing, wheezing or difficulty breathing. Longer term exposures to elevated concentrations of NO2 may contribute to the development of asthma and potentially increase susceptibility to other respiratory infections. People with asthma, as well as children and the elderly are generally at greater risk of the negative health effects of NO2.
