Application
Circular grit chambers are preferably used in the mechanical treatment stage of small to medium size sewage treatment plants to remove sand and other heavy solids from the waste water to avoid disturbances at operation of the treatment plant.
Function
The waste water is fed tangentially into the circular grit chamber to induce a circulatory movement of the water. The circulatory movement is supported by a mixer ensuring that also during low flow periods sufficient flow velocity is generated. As result of a spiral flow pattern and the centrifugal force, sand and heavy parts are moved to the peripheral wall and further to the central grit hopper. From there it can be removed by means of a centrifugal pump or air lift into a channel or directly into a grit separator.
The de-gritted waste water is discharged via the effluent channel which is arranged above the influent channel.
