This pressure-balanced metallic expansion joint is used in cases where there is a change of direction, where an expansion joint with control rods must absorb axial movement while retaining the force of the pressure. The elbow used for the change of direction is mounted between the line bellows and the compensation bellows, which has the same area and is connected with control rods designed to support the force of the pressure. Depending upon the lateral movement, a single or a universal line bellows will be used.
Characteristics and Properties
Depending upon the design, absorb axial movements, lateral movements, or a combination of both.
Retains the pressure in both directions.
Does not require fixed anchoring, since the forces of the pressure are balanced.
Requires a minimum number of guides.
Transfers minimum loads to the equipment connected.
The purpose of this type of expansion joint is to support and balance the force of the pressure, in a manner such that fixed anchoring is not necessary in the pipe system, and so that the forces and movements on the flanges with the delicate equipment connected are reduced to tolerable levels, with axial and lateral movement being absorbed.
