The CG Power Systems MicroSub was first developed to meet the technical requirements for rural and small scale suburban underground cable power distribution in France. In many scenic rural areas the preference was not to have overhead lines disturb the environment wherever possible. This was particularly true in small villages and nearby rural schools. The solution was to use underground cables and MicroSubs.
The MicroSub is fitted with HV in-tank full range or current limiting fuses as standard and a single or 3 phase outgoing fuse distribution unit. Alternative LV systems include LV circuit breakers or fuse switch units. HV termination is by plug-in bushings or by the conventional dry type cable box as shown here. The unit shown above was developed with respect to the defined needs of a major UK utility and their operational systems. Other UK utilities also use this type of unit.
The economic case for this type of substation is made where the H pole mounted transformer and pole mounted fuse systems have been used with underground cables to and from them. The MicroSub in the same location is low profile, secure and avoids the impact of the H pole structure on the environment.
