The linear actuators shown in the figure are commonly called "reciprocators".
In the first case, the two carriages are moved simultaneously because while one goes up the other goes down (classic application is that of the counterweight to balance the efforts on the engine). In the second, however, the two trolleys move away and approach simultaneously (useful if you want to create a gripping system, opening doors, a compactor, etc.).
