Description

Scattered transmission The total transmission degree constitutes both the directed and the scattered proportions. The scattered proportion is referred to as haze in some applications and defines the corresponding diffusion effect of a radiation beam penetrating a material. Causes for the diffusion hereby include surface disturbance, embedment and the structural pattern of a material. Measurement of scattered transmission The scattered proportion of the transmission can be measurement using a collimated light source and an integrating sphere. The sample is directly illuminated with the light beam as per the 0/D measurement set described by DIN 5036 and CIE130. The integrating sphere is placed with the light exit port aligned to the sample. The directed proportion of the transmission exits the integrating sphere through a port aligned at an angle of 180° to the measurement port. The diffuse transmittance is captured by the sphere. An illustration of a measurement setup for haze measurements in thin foils is found in the ASTN D 1003. Haze measurements The LCRT-2005-S has a D/0 measurement setup that corresponds to the Helmholtz reciprocity principle for reversibility of the radiation beam and that offers an alternative to the 0/D measurement geometry. The scattered proportion of the transmission can not be measured directly when using the LCRT-2005-S. This applies the principle where the entire transmittance is measured for diffuse illumination of thin samples whereas direct transmittance is measured for parallel illumination.
