Large gear reduction is successfully done with the application of worm gears. Generally, the reduced ratio is 20:1 but 300:1 or larger ratio can also be achieved easily. Some worm gears possess a unique property which is, it can bring gear into action. The shallow angle of the worm assists to increase the friction between the gears and the worms. Hence it prevents the gears from making the worms spin. This above feature makes this system suitable to be used for machines like conveyor where locking feature can be employed to be used in brakes. Worm gears are largely used in Torsen differentials which is an integral part of high-performances trucks and cars.
