Test system for materials testing on composites
Composite materials are used in many products in the aerospace industry. They are particularly lightweight, while offering high strength and good durability. The material properties exhibit a strong directional dependence. In the direction of the fibers, both strength and stiffness are much higher than across the main fiber direction. For a complete evaluation of the material properties, it is therefore important to load the specimens in different directions depending on the application.
With the universal testing machines of the inspekt series, tensile tests, bending tests as well as compression tests can be performed on CFRP and GKF specimens using various testing tools.
The material properties of carbon fiber and glass fiber plastic composites are influenced by the ambient temperature. Since such materials are exposed to considerable temperature fluctuations in many areas of application, such as aerospace, testing under these conditions is of great importance. By adapting a temperature chamber to the test room, the various types of stress (tensile, compression, bending) can be applied in a temperature range from -80°C to +260°C.
By using a video extensometer, the longitudinal strain of the CFRP and GFRP specimen can be determined both inside and outside the temperature chamber. The advantage of an optical extensometer is the non-contact measuring principle. The brittle fracture behavior of many carbon fiber reinforced plastics cannot lead to damage of the measuring system.
