Bushings or shoulder washers have a cylindrical shape with one end widened to create a more prominent edge. This enlarged portion is called the flange, and the remaining tube-like structure that extends to the other end is called the shank. The shank is hollow and can be threaded internally if necessary. The shank is generally inserted into an assembly to provide added support to a rotating shaft, while the flange serves to stabilize the part in place. Bushings allow adjacent components to move without transferring vibrations to the rest of the unit. They can also be used to fasten and provide required spacing.
