They convert rotary motion into linear motion. Between the shaft, more precisely the threaded shaft, and the nut, the balls roll infinitely via a ball recirculation system, guaranteeing frictionless motion for your application. The driven nut unit basically works just like a normal ballscrew nut, the difference being that the shaft is stationary. In applications with a very large stroke, ballscrews can be operated highly dynamically without being limited by the critical speed of the shaft.
