Pelicans are among the largest and heaviest flying birds in the world. Their wingspan extends to three meters and they can weigh up to 13 kilos, but their most striking characteristic is the throat bag, in which larger members of the species can hold up to 13 litres, which is used as a fishing net.
Pelicans are excellent thermal gliders and highly energy-efficient in flight; they can stay in the air for up to 24 hours, cover distances of 500 km, and ascend to a height of 3,000 metres.
