Albatrosses are outstanding flyers and can manoeuvre even in storms. Their wingspan can reach 3.5 metres, and they travel thousands of kilometres away from the coast, so it is very difficult to spot them, although they cannot fly without wind. Albatrosses are capable of reversing their direction at high speeds, although a landing is always a hazardous undertaking. They have less difficulty with take-offs and landing on water, and can swim skilfully even in heavy surf.
