Belugas live in arctic and sub-arctic waters. They grow to between three and six metres long and can weigh between 400 and 1,000 kilos. The most characteristic feature of belugas is their ability to change their facial expression: they can stretch the corners of their mouths up and down, or purse their lips into a pointed shape. Like narwhals, belugas communicate by a type of ‘singing’.
