Manta rays are the fish with the biggest brains. Flat in shape, their central disk can exceed a width of nine metres. Their skin is dark on the top and white beneath, and their spot markings vary to the point that their unique pattern can be used to identify them.
They live in temperate waters and are related to sharks, although these gentle creatures, unlike most stingrays, have no barbs and are not poisonous. Their beautiful swimming movements have given them the name of ‘birds of the sea’.
