Sodium Chloride (NaCl), commonly known as rock salt, is a soft, highly soluble and hydroscopic material. It transmits over a broad wavelength range of about 0.25 to 16μm and is ideal for lenses and other optical components over the UV and IR range. Sodium Chloride has a maximum operating temperature of 400°C and requires protection from atmospheric conditions due to moisture degradation. Coating is recommended where the material is exposed and a high standard of polish can be achieved under humidity controlled conditions. It has a hardness of HK18.2, which is soft, and requires careful handling.
Sodium Chloride is typically used for optical components in the UV to IR spectrum, and is of particular use in FTIR (Fourier Transform Infra-Red) spectroscopy and high power laser systems due to its low absorbance.
Knight Optical supply a range of quality Sodium Chloride optical components including Sodium Chloride windows, Sodium Chloride lenses, Sodium Chloride prisms, and Sodium Chloride blanks either from stock or bespoke custom made to your specification for a range of applications. Every component is individually tested by our highly skilled technicians in our state of the art metrology lab to ensure all components meet our high quality standards.
