Derailment still remains one of the major rail safety concern worldwide with thousands of occurences every year.
Specific Wayside systems are able to measure when values exceed thresholds. The reporting involves: irregular running behavior, increased derailment risks and irregular stresses caused to wheelsets and rail.
Wheel Impact Load Detector
The system records wheel shape irregularities (roundness deviations in the circumference) as peaks presence. The typical types of deviation are classified and quantified (flat spots, polygonization, flattening, welded “pick-ups”, eccentricity). The signals are derived from the measuring elements, which displace the rails in the vertical direction and, then an information array is formed in the evaluation device from the signals, which corresponds at least to the periphery of the wheel. The periodic signal of the shapes of the wheel is evaluated with the aid of a Fourier development and a patented algorithm.
