Bottom canals are used to ventilate and light the rooms of buildings below ground level, but with windows. The shaft is recessed into the ground in front of the window. It is used to keep the room and walls dry, as soil and rainwater collect at the bottom of the shaft. It is also energy-efficient, as it provides a certain degree of natural lighting.
