Plasmas are ionised gases. Plasma is considered the fourth physical state of matter after solid, liquid and gas. Physical plasmas are an indispensable tool for treating surfaces in manufacturing, research and development. Its reactivity is used intentionally to change surface characteristics and produce materials with specific features. Plasma can be used to deliberately modify surface characteristics. A polymer surface that was previously hydrophobic can be made hydrophilic, meaning that it can be wetted evenly with various liquids. Plasma is thus excellently suited for chemical-free treatment of surfaces.
