The choice of coating is therefore very important and depends on the desired welding characteristics. Coated electrodes are composed of a core and a covering: The core consists of a conductive metal rod that has the sole function of adding material to the piece. The material of which it is composed depends on the base material to be welded. During welding, the core melts slightly before the coating.
