High speed ultrasonic pulses are injected periodically through the wall of liquid filled pipelines. These pulses travel through the pipeline fluid and are reflected by the opposite wall back to the sensor effectively producing an invisible curtain of ultrasound. When a pig passes through this ultrasonic ‘curtain’ the signals are interrupted or distorted. This distortion is picked up by the id 5000 which, after filtering and analysis, signals the passage of a pig.
Passive Sensor (ID5000P)
The id 5000 listens to the acoustic activity on the outside wall of the pipeline. Sound propagates along the pipeline due in part to activity within the pipeline (fluid or gas flow and pig activity) and from external sources (pumps, maintenance activity and wave motion in subsea applications). These sounds are analyzed using DSP techniques by the id 5000 to determine their nature and if they fit the signature of a pig passing cause an event to be signaled.
