Water miscible fluids offer the best cooling. If the speed increases more than 30m per minute during machining, the lubricating ability of the fluid becomes comparatively unimportant relative to cooling because of the greater rate of heat generation; water miscible fluids become the preferred choice. Some of the water miscible fluids with enhanced lubricating power may even replace neat cutting oils.
Water miscible fluids form mixtures ranging from emulsions to solutions when mixed with water. Due to high specific heat, high thermal conductivity and high heat of vaporization, water is one of the most effective cooling media known. Blended with water, water miscible fluids provide the combined cooling and lubrication required for the metal removal operation conducted at high speeds and at lower pressures.
