Heat in­su­la­tion may be re­quired for safety rea­sons, pro­vid­ing pro­tec­tion against ac­ci­den­tal con­tact in cases where sur­face tem­per­a­tures are high – but it may also be a nec­es­sary part of the processes that take place in the sys­tem. Its pur­pose is to pre­vent heat and/​or en­ergy losses. Dif­fer­ing re­quire­ments have re­sulted in de­signs vary­ing widely in in­su­la­tion thick­ness and in­su­lat­ing ma­te­r­ial. To pro­tect heat and sound in­su­la­tion against me­chan­i­cal or en­vi­ron­men­tal in­flu­ences, a sheet metal cas­ing made from alu­minium or gal­va­nized/​stain­less sheet metal is used, de­pend­ing on the re­quire­ments of the ap­pli­ca­tion.
