Expanding blind rivets are required when soft or porous components such as wood, hard fiber, fiberglass or plasterboard are to be joined together with a high clamping force. During the setting process the mandrel drops out of the hollow rivet and on the closing head side the mandrel divides the hollow rivet into four parts. These then claw into the material.
Typical applications are plastic and wooden element assembly, caravan construction and the fastening of interior trim.
