An ion-exchange resin or ion-exchange polymer is a resin or polymer that acts as a medium for ion exchange. The cation resin replaces contaminating cations such as Ca++, Mg++, Na+, NH4+, and amines in the sample with hydrogen ions. The hydrogen ions exchanged for the other cations in the sample increase the conductivity contributed by the contaminant salts of mineral acid anions listed above by 3 or 4 times. Applications Resin column is used for the measurement of cation conductivity.
