Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Hazard Communication Standard (HCS) incorporates the United Nations’ Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS) to improve safety and protect the health of anyone working with chemicals.
The Final Rule states that all chemical manufacturers, importers, distributors and employers must comply with all modified provisions. All distributors can no longer ship chemicals labeled under the old HCS. Employers must update alternative workplace labeling and hazard communication program and provide additional employee training for newly identified physical or health hazards.
A GHS-compliant label must contain these six elements:
Product name or identifier
Signal word
Hazard statements
Precautionary statements
Supplier identification
Pictograms
On May 20, 2024, OSHA issued a final rule that updates the HCS to align with the seventh revision of GHS and better protect workers.
