The Tinius Olsen Model 500L Laser Non-Contact Extensometer can be used in measuring medium to extensive elongation materials. It is also well suited for quantifying the elongation of fragile samples through a characteristic rate ranging from –70 °C up to 300 °C.
The Model 500L utilizes a minimal power helium neon laser. This comes with an accuracy precision optical component. The laser projects a red scanning beam which is directed at 2 reflective targets. These targets are fastened to the specimen. Through this mechanism, scanning test specimen through the glass viewing window of an environmental test chamber is enabled. The equipment is provided with a punch that can be used in cutting narrow strips of adhesive reflective tape. The gauge length is determined by fastening these two strips to the sample.
