Spring shims reduce the transmission of structure-borne noises on helical springs, assume an electrical insulating function and reduce bending loads on helical springs. They usually consist of two or several flat plates incorporating a molded-on elastomeric layer. The ratio between pressure and thrust stiffness can be adjusted over a wide range, depending on the design given to the elastomeric layer. The elastomeric compounds used for spring shims are characterized, in particular, by well-defined settling values.
