Rotary encoders for Ex use are available in two different types of protection. A distinction is made between the “flameproof enclosure” (Ex d) type of protection and the “intrinsic safety” type of protection (Ex ia and ib).
Type of protection Ex d
Devices with the type of protection Ex d are designed in such a way that their housings are not damaged if an explosive mixture explodes inside, thus preventing the explosion from spreading to the surrounding explosive atmosphere.
Type of protection Ex ia and ib
With the Ex ia type of protection, the current and voltage values are kept at such a low level that no ignition sparks can occur and an explosive atmosphere cannot ignite.
The incremental EX and absolute value EX rotary encoders meet the requirements of the types of protection d, tb and i. The W+S measuring systems X700 series with approval according to: I M2 Ex I Mb; II 2 G Ex d IIC T6 and T4; II 2 D Ex tb IIIC T70°C Db. These explosion-proof rotary encoders with flameproof enclosure are certified according to ATEX and IECEx.
Our entire range of standard incremental encoders from the GESgroup can be designed for class Ex ia and ib.
Our IP rotary encoders are devices with a higher degree of protection (same housing as the Ex devices) and comply with IP67 static and IP66 rotary.
