Sensors Europe
Who we are
Sensors, Inc. was founded in 1969 to commercialize infrared emissions measurement technology inspired at the famed Willow Run Laboratories. Co-founded by several University of Michigan professors, Sensors looked to capitalize on the application of thermopile infrared detectors and found almost immediate potential in the growing interest in “state of the art” exhaust gas analyzers induced by the introduction of the Clean Air Act in 1970 and the creation of the EPA that same year.
Shortly following formation of the EPA, the National Vehicle and Fuel Emissions Laboratory (or NVFEL) opened its doors in Ann Arbor in 1971, just a short distance from Sensors’ headquarters and became one of Sensors’ strongest and longest running customers. In fact, the Ann Arbor area has been home to dozens of respected companies with an interest in gas analysis - but we were here first. We were a part of the initiatives that gave birth to in-flight analyzers that enabled the Inspection and Maintenance programs, as well as Portable Emissions Measurement Systems (PEMS, as they are now called), which in turn enabled on road emission testing programs worldwide.
Sensors’ early years focused on the marketing and development of commercial uses for infrared technologies. As the company grew, Sensors turned their development and technical expertise toward the design, development, and manufacture of transducers to measure gases in medical and automotive applications. In the early ‘80s, Sensors, Inc. opened a Sensors Europe office in Amsterdam to serve their growing customers base throughout Europe. By 1989, Sensors Europe GmbH was formed in Düsseldorf, and 10 short years later Sensors Europe GmbH acquired Sensors Devices and expanded its product base to include analyzers for environmental applications.
Today, Sensors is a noted leader in the supply of gas analysis instrumentation and a leading manufacturer of innovative exhaust analysis solutions for the automotive market worldwide. The company's emissions measurement solutions are used by government regulatory agencies and universities, as well as engine and vehicle manufacturers in the U.S., Europe and Asia, for the measurement of CO, CO2, NO, NO2, THC, NMHC, CH4, NH3, O2, N2O, SF6, Particulate Mass, and Particle Number.
Our SEMTECH® DS+, Sensors' 5th generation PEMS, is the culmination of more than fifteen years of experience in the design, development, and application of PEMS that is significantly reduced in size, weight, and power required.
